Chatkal HPP: Electricity to be transmitted through system of Uzbekistan

The capacity of Chatkal hydroelectric power plant (HPP) could reach 1,500 megawatts. The Deputy Minister of Energy Sabyrbek Sultanbekov announced at a round table discussion.

According to him, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan signed an agreement to study the potential of using Chatkal river for the power industry. There are two stations there. Their total capacity during the Soviet Union was estimated at 1,800 megawatts.

«It really will be less now. The territory of the reservoir is built up with houses in the area of the upper station. Therefore, there will be less water, and consequently, less generation too. But the lower reaches have not changed, this station will produce at least 1,500 megawatts. The power delivery is practically impossible to date from the Kyrgyz side, but through the network of Uzbekistan, through the Unified Energy System, we can receive this electricity both for our own needs and for the needs of the population of the Republic of Uzbekistan,» Sabyrbek Sultanbekov told.
