WHO says COVID-19 remains global health emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has extended the global health emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic by three months. The decision was made at a meeting of the UN Emergency Committee, the organization’s website said.

It is noted that WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus agreed with the committee’s recommendation regarding the current coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic continues to be a public health emergency of international concern, he said.

The experts concluded that the coronavirus pandemic «may be approaching a tipping point.»

«Achieving higher levels of population immunity worldwide through infection and/or vaccination may limit the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on morbidity and mortality, but there is no doubt that this virus will remain a persistent pathogen in humans and animals throughout life,» the statement says.

The Committee recommended the WHO develop proposals for alternative mechanisms to combat coronavirus after the state of emergency is lifted.

UN meetings on the emergency related to COVID-19 are held every three months.
