Export of timber from Kyrgyzstan outside EAEU prohibited

Export of timber outside the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is currently prohibited. The Ministry of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan reminds.

The ministry said that Russia had chosen checkpoints on its border through which, from January 1, 2022, it was allowed to export unprocessed timber. Given the geographical location of the checkpoints, the export of timber from Russia to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan is actually completely prohibited.

In addition, at the initiative of the Russian Federation, an instruction was adopted by the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council on the application of export regulation measures by the EAEU member states in relation to a number of commodity items, including timber. To prevent the flow of timber supplied from Russia duty-free to third countries, Kyrgyzstan periodically imposes temporary bans for a period of six months on the export of timber from the Kyrgyz Republic outside the customs territory of the EAEU.

«To date, there is a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers that provides for a ban on the export of timber and timber products. The ban has been imposed not only on timber originating from the Russian Federation, but also on the export of timber, regardless of the country of origin. Based on the data of domestic consumption, an export quota of 29,680 cubic meters has been allocated for Kyrgyzstan, within which Kyrgyz companies import timber,» the Ministry of Economy said.

A single measure is in force to date for regulating the export of timber on the territory of the EAEU. It also bans export of this type of product.
