Up to 40 percent of cervical cancer cases detected at late stages in Kyrgyzstan

Up to 40 percent of cases of cervical cancer in Kyrgyzstan are detected at late stages of development. The Republican Center for Health Promotion and Mass Communication reported.

According to it, the Ministry of Health annually spends more than $ 500,000 on the diagnosis, treatment and care of such patients.

According to the estimates of the World Health Organization, about 600 women in the Kyrgyz Republic develop cervical cancer every year, of which 300 cases are fatal. This type is the second leading cause of cancer in women in the country and is the most common form of cancer in women aged 15-44.

Doctors hope that the start of vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV) will help prevent the disease.

«Recent studies from the UK show that HPV vaccination reduced precancerous lesions and cervical cancer by almost 90 percent among early vaccinated groups. Sweden also predicts that cervical cancer can be eliminated in this state in five years. Therefore, I am quite sure that the introduction of this vaccine will also help many women in Kyrgyzstan not get cervical cancer,» the officials quote Joana Madureira Lima, Special Representative of the WHO Regional Director in the Kyrgyz Republic, as saying.
