Agreement with Uzbekistan on disputed border sections submitted to Parliament

An agreement with Uzbekistan on disputed border sections, including a clause on transfer of Kempir-Abad reservoir, has been submitted to Parliament. The Parliament informed 24.kg news agency.

A package of documents will be submitted for ratification in the coming days. After that, the procedure of plots description will begin.

The head of the State Committee for National Security, Kamchybek Tashiev, told the deputies on October 10 that in total more than 19,000 hectares of land remain the property of Kyrgyzstan, and 4,485 hectares of the water area of Kempir-Abad reservoir are transferred to Uzbekistan, but two countries will jointly manage it.

Kempir-Abad reservoir (it is called Andijan in Uzbekistan) is located at the junction of Osh and Jalal-Abad regions of Kyrgyzstan and Andijan region of Uzbekistan. It was built in 1983 on the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic.

In 1973, Uzbekistan provided land compensation — 4,100 hectares were transferred to Kyrgyzstan.

The reservoir belongs to Kyrgyzstan. Its area is 4,400 hectares. The maximum filling volume is 1.9 cubic kilometers. Once it was leased to Uzbekistan.
