The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) reports that the fire has affected its warehouse in Bishkek and led to destruction of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies stored there. The national fire services managed to bring the fire under control, there were no casualties.
«We were lucky that no one was hurt in the fire. We believe that the relevant authorities are now working to find out the cause. Assessing the damage, the UNDP team is already working to minimize any disruption in the work of critical prevention and treatment services through the national HIV and TB programs, which are being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Health and other partners. Our team is already in contact with UNDP global vendors to ensure timely replacements and proper care for those in need,» Louise Chamberlain, UNDP Resident Representative in Kyrgyzstan, said.
UNDP has been supporting the Kyrgyz Republic in the implementation of the country’s grants from the Global Fund since 2011. This assistance is the backbone of national HIV and TB programs, providing quality prevention for more than 30,000 people, diagnosis, treatment and care for more than 6,000 people with HIV and TB every year.
