Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Japarov spoke at the 2nd Regional Summit on Sustainable Development Goals «Beyond COVID — Towards a Just Recovery in Central Asia» held in Almaty (Kazakhstan). Press service of the Cabinet reported.
Akylbek Japarov noted the timeliness of convening the regional summit to review the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
«Obviously, due to the coronavirus pandemic and its negative socio-economic consequences, we are behind the schedule in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. It is encouraging that by common efforts we have stopped the coronavirus threat by vaccination measures and are protecting the life and health of our citizens. Our common goal now is to collectively move forward in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and consolidate the results achieved. Kyrgyzstan is committed to the implementation of the international sustainable development agenda and adheres to the global obligation to «leave no one behind,» the head of the Cabinet said.
He also stressed that the Sustainable Development Goals are taken into account in state policy measures and integrated into the country’s National Development Strategy until 2040.
To date, national analogues have been developed on 140 out of 232 global indicators. Earlier, the United Nations Framework Program for Cooperation in the Field of Sustainable Development in Kyrgyzstan for 2023-2027 was signed during the visit of the First Deputy Secretary-General of the UN Amina Mohammed to Kyrgyzstan. According to the voluntary national review on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2020, Kyrgyzstan has reached half of all indicators set by the UN.
«When defining national priorities in achieving goals, Kyrgyzstan pays special attention to the negative impact of climate change on our unique mountain nature. Last year, at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biodiversity in Kunming and the Climate Summit in Glasgow, Kyrgyzstan informed the world community about the detrimental effects of climate change on mountain glaciers and biodiversity. We call on international partners to support the efforts of our republic and mountainous countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,» the head of the Cabinet of Ministers concluded.
