Journalist Kaiyrgul Urumkanova believes that the authorities do not want to have independent media in the country. She stated it today at the first working session of the media forum «Media in Kyrgyzstan: Steps into the Future», organized by Mediadialogue with the assistance of the European Union, which took place in Bishkek.
According to her, the laws that are adopted testify to this. They pose a direct threat to freedom of speech and violate the existing balance of checks and balances in society.
Other forum participants also noted that the documents on counteracting extremism and on protection from inaccurate and false information are dangerous for the media. The latter actually introduces censorship, which is prohibited by the Constitution.
Analysis also showed that these laws contain legal uncertainties that can be interpreted in different ways, which in turn can lead to violations of human rights.
