Deltacron strain of coronavirus has been detected in Europe. Maria Van Kerkhove, the COVID-19 Technical Lead of the World Health Organization, announced at a briefing. RIA Novosti reports.
She said the strain had been detected in France, the Netherlands and Denmark. «But very low level of infection has been recorded,» she said.
Maria Van Kerkhove added that Deltacron appeared from the combination of subspecies of Delta and Omicron strains. WHO experts had already discussed this variant at a meeting on March 7.
In early January, a team of scientists from the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cyprus reported the discovery of a new strain of coronavirus, a hybrid of Delta and Omicron. However, the WHO then suggested that the Deltacron strain was highly likely to have originated from contamination during sequencing and suggested that the name Deltacron should not be used.
