WHO recommends drug to prevent severe COVID-19 course

The WHO recommended a drug that prevents the severe course of COVID-19. UN News reports.

It is noted that the organization recommends the use of molnupiravir for non-severe COVID-19 to prevent the need for hospitalization. It is the first oral antiviral drug approved by the WHO to fight this infection.

Studies have shown that it can reduce the risk of hospitalization or death by 50 percent, if used as early as possible after infection.

The experts emphasize that molnupiravir is a new, understudied drug and suggest countries to actively monitor the condition of patients during its use in order to mitigate possible side effects. Due to the fact that at present there is not yet sufficient data on the effect of the drug, WHO suggests using it only for non-severe forms of COVID-19 in patients who are at risk: not vaccinated, the elderly, people with immunodeficiency and chronic diseases.

At this stage, molnupiravir is not recommended for children, pregnant and breastfeeding women. During the period of use of the drug, it is necessary to use contraceptives to avoid conception.
