Situation in Ukraine: Kazakhstan declares neutrality

Deputy Defense Minister of Kazakhstan Sultan Kamaletdinov spoke out about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Tengrinews.kz reports.

According to him, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has nothing to do with Kazakhstan. «We do not support either side. There can be no questions in this regard,» Sultan Kamaletdinov said.

Journalists asked whether the Kazakhstani Armed Forces would be able to ensure security, if the Ukrainian scenario repeats in the country.

«This question worries everyone, of course. We hope that the Armed Forces ... are ready to fulfil their tasks. We, of course, give a guarantee of peace and security in Kazakhstan, that is for sure. The Armed Forces, other troops and military formations are maintained by the state for this purpose, because our task is to ensure the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country,» Kamaletdinov said.

Today is the eighth day of fighting in Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, the Russian President Vladimir Putin announced start of a special military operation. It was regarded in Ukraine and in the West as a full-scale invasion.

Second round of Russian-Ukrainian talks is expected today. The main topic is a ceasefire.
