WHO has approved another drug to treat COVID-19. UN News reports.
It is noted that the organization has included tocilizumab, which belongs to monoclonal antibodies, in the list of drugs recommended for treatment of patients with coronavirus. This is the sixth drug approved by the WHO to fight COVID-19.
"Patients with severe or critical COVID-19 form often have an overreaction of the immune system that can cause serious health damage. Such an excessive immune response is suppressed by interleukin-6 inhibitor drugs, including tocilizumab. Compared to the standard treatment scheme, prescription of these drugs to patients with severe or critical forms of the disease can reduce the likelihood of death by 13 percent, UN News noted.
According to the studies, intravenous administration of tocilizumab is effective in severe disease and is recommended for treatment of such patients along with oxygen support, corticosteroids and other medications.
