U.S. Department of State sees positive developments in Kyrgyzstan

U.S. Department of State released 2018 Kyrgyz Republic Human Rights Report. The document is available in Kyrgyz and Russian.

As the U.S. Embassy in Kyrgyzstan outlines, this year the report highlights significant achievements by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and civil society in the human rights sphere.

According to the U.S. authorities, the media environment has improved under President Sooronbai Jeenbekov. As for the other positive developments, the USA mention provision of relatively open access to the Internet; establishment of strong torture monitoring bodies to reduce the use of torture now and prevent torture in the future; continued support of academic freedom; respect by the Kyrgyz government for freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of association; conducting of competitive elections and participation of women and minorities in the political process.

U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic Donald Lu believes that Kyrgyzstan continues to make progress respecting human rights and advancing democratic values. He congratulated the Kyrgyz Republic on its most positive human rights report in the past five years.
