Kyrgyzstan has to draw up adequate plan for nutrition improvement

«Kyrgyzstan could learn from other countries of the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement (SUN) the drawing up of an adequate plan of action to improve the nutrition of the population,»  Assistant to the UN Secretary-General Gerda Verburg told reporters today.

According to her, the plan for improving nutrition should be at the center of the national development plan of the state, because all the structures should contribute to it. Then it’s easier to make an estimate and to accurately calculate what amounts will be required for each of the activities. When the government finds out the exact amount, it will be possible to determine how much it can allocate from the budget for this, said Gerda Verburg.

«For example, the government, based on the budget, can cover 20 percent of the costs of nutrition improvement activities. The rest can be asked from the international community. It is undesirable for the state to prepare a plan and completely transfer its funding to the donors or someone else. It is impossible to achieve responsibility and fulfill obligations without the investment of own funds,» concluded Gerda Verburg.

Gerda Verburg is an Assistant to the UN Secretary — General, Coordinator of the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement (SUN). Kyrgyzstan has been a member of the movement since 2011.

Gerda Verburg met the day before with representatives of the Kyrgyz government, the Parliament and civil society to discuss improving the quality of food issue.
