President of Kyrgyzstan meets with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

The President of Kyrgyzstan met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York.

Welcoming Sadyr Japarov, Antonio Guterres expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality shown during his visit to the Kyrgyz Republic. He emphasized that he considers the head of state his great friend, and noted that the doors of the UN are always open to him.

The UN Secretary-General also noted that Kyrgyzstan takes a special place in Central Asia in the implementation of mountain initiatives and has a significant potential to take a leading position in the field of renewable energy and climate projects, and noted the personal efforts of the head of state.

Sadyr Japarov stressed that the Kyrgyz Republic recognizes the UN as an authoritative and universal international organization. He expressed confidence that its activities would continue to be aimed at maintaining peace and prosperity for all mankind, as well as solving global social, economic and climate problems.

The President confirmed the republic’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on people-centered policies. He announced the start of the second voluntary national review of the SDGs, which is aimed at further developing the country and achieving the ambitious goal of joining the top 30 countries in the world by 2030. He outlined climate challenges for the region, such as melting glaciers and shrinking water resources, called for support for the creation of a UN regional center for energy efficiency, and proposed a mechanism for exchanging public debt for green projects, which will be a significant contribution to the fight against climate change.

Sadyr Japarov drew attention to the importance of promotion of the mountain agenda, invited the UN to take part in the preparation for holding the Second Global Mountain Summit Bishkek + 25, which will be held in 2027, and proposed creating an international platform UN Mountains to coordinate actions on the sustainable development of mountainous regions.
