Kyrgyzstan ratifies protocol on peacekeeping activities of CSTO

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov signed the Law on the Ratification of the Protocol on Amendments to the Agreement on Peacekeeping Activities of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) dated October 6, 2007.

As noted, the document itself was signed on September 16, 2021 in Dushanbe. It provides for the concept of a «coordinating state» (one of the CSTO member states, determined by the CSTO Collective Security Council). Under its auspices, collective peacekeeping forces of the CSTO are being created for use in UN peacekeeping operations.

The participation of the CSTO collective peacekeeping forces in United Nations peacekeeping operations is stipulated in an agreement concluded by the coordinating state with the authorized UN unit.

At the same time, issues of including contingents in the collective peacekeeping forces of the CSTO are regulated by bilateral and multilateral agreements between the coordinating state and other CSTO members.

Each CSTO member state also has the right to send its peacekeeping contingents (registered in the UN Peacekeeping Capacity Readiness System) to participate in peacekeeping operations under a UN mandate, informing the CSTO Collective Security Council about its participation.

The law provides for the implementation of domestic procedures necessary for ratification of the protocol.

The law was adopted by the Parliament on November 22, 2023.
