Record growth of car imports from Germany to Kyrgyzstan registered

Robin Brooks, chief economist at the Institute of International Finance (IIF), said that the supply of cars and spare parts from Germany to Russia rose sharply after February 24, 2022. The post was published on the X social media platform.

«German exports of motor vehicles and parts (blue) to Kyrgyzstan are up 5500% since Russia invaded Ukraine. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that all this stuff is heading to Russia. It’s not like Kyrgyzstan is suddenly in a massive boom. Germany has to stop this...,» Robin Brooks posted.

He also noted that exports to Kyrgyzstan won’t drive Germany into recession. Robin Brooks suggested that the spare parts are «used by Russian oligarchs to repair their G wagons.»

Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic Edil Baisalov responded to the post.

«Dear Dr. Brooks, I do hope you will not persist in your picking on Kyrgyzstan. It does take a rocket scientist to figure that the boom in our economy is real. Not all of it is what you think. We implemented significant admin reforms, practicing good governance (i.e. not stealing),» Edil Baisalov posted.

Representatives of the European Union have repeatedly discussed with the authorities of Kyrgyzstan the issue of circumventing sanctions against Russia. Each time, officials claim that they comply with all obligations.
