Sadyr Japarov discusses problems of mountain countries with UNDP Head

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov met with the Administrator of the UN Development Programme Achim Steiner within the framework of the High-Level Week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, held in New York (USA). Press service of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

They exchanged views on cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the UN, discussed issues related to support for reforms in the country and practical implementation of its international initiatives. Sadyr Japarov noted the importance of implementation of the program to support Kyrgyzstan in the field of sustainable development and food security.

He also said that half of the time allotted for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will end in 2023 and noted that the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, held in the framework of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, is a very important and relevant event. Comprehensive measures are being taken at the national level to implement the Sustainable Development Goals in Kyrgyzstan.

Sadyr Japarov proposed to deepen cooperation in agriculture, hydropower, renewable energy, tourism, education, transport and digitalization sectors. In particular, the President noted a major project of the three countries — the construction of Kambarata HPP 1, implemented by Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. This project is open to all international investors.

In addition, the Kyrgyz side, as Sadyr Japarov stated, relies on UNDP support in the implementation of environmental and green projects, as well as support to achieve the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He drew Achim Steiner’s attention to the situation related to global climate change, which has led to intensive melting of mountain glaciers.

Problems and challenges of mountain countries should not be the problem of mountain countries only, common efforts to solve mountain problems should be focused on the global community.
