Kumtor case: Defendants compensate more than 600 million soms

Defendants in the criminal case, held in custody on the fact of financial violations at Kumtor Gold Company CJSC, compensated the state for damages in the amount of more than 600 million soms. Arslanbek Maliev, chairman of the parliamentary commission for studying the activities of the gold mining enterprise, announced at a parliamentary meeting.

He noted that the Prosecutor General’s Office, based on the results of the audit of the Accounts Chamber, initiated four criminal cases against nine people on the fact of financial violations in the amount of 1,146,449 billion soms.

According to the main supervisory body, 642,839 million soms have been reimbursed to date.

Earlier, commenting on Kumtor case, President Sadyr Japarov said that the prisoners could be placed under house arrest if they compensated the full amount of the damage caused.

The former head of Kumtor Gold Company, Tengiz Bolturuk, in his appeal to Sadyr Japarov, asked for forgiveness for not meeting his expectations and failing to put an end to corruption at Kumtor. Earlier, his wife Ilmira Alpysbayeva also wrote that her husband was allegedly being tortured. Tengiz Bolturuk himself denied the statement of his wife.

Tengiz Bolturuk and Ryspek Toktogulov were dismissed from all the positions they held. It was reported that the Prosecutor General’s Office began a detailed check. It resulted in three criminal cases with preliminary damage to the state of 1 billion soms. As a result, the former external manager of Kumtor was detained and placed in the remand center of the State Committee for National Security until March 10, 2023. Tengiz Bolturuk himself does not admit his guilt. He stated that all the accusations were false. His lawyer says that the accused is ready to cooperate with the investigation.
