To date, 90 percent of the world’s population has developed immunity to COVID-19, but it is too early to calm down. The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a briefing.
According to him, this happened due to vaccination or prior infection.
«We are much closer to being able to say that the emergency phase of the pandemic is over — but we’re not there yet,» he told reporters.
He noted that in the past five weeks, the number of weekly deaths from coronavirus has slightly decreased, but more than 8,500 people died last week. «Since the emergence of the strain, the COVID-19 omicron has continued to mutate. There are over 500 omicron substrains in circulation today. All of them are very contagious,» said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
He encouraged all countries to apply a risk-based approach. Gaps in surveillance, testing and vaccination continue to create ideal conditions for the emergence of a new, worrying variant that could cause significant mortality.
