Screenings of films about human rights banned in Bishkek

Bishkek hosts the annual international documentary film festival on human rights Bir Duino. It is dedicated to the topic «Climate and crises: situation with the fundamental rights of citizens.»

According to the organizers, the competition program includes 22 documentaries from Ukraine, the Czech Republic, France, Slovakia, Germany, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Screenings are scheduled to take place at Broadway cinema from November 14 to November 18.

However, it became known that a ban on screening of films has been introduced. The head of the human rights center Bir Duino Kyrgyzstan Tolekan Ismailova wrote about this on her Facebook page.

The Ministry of Culture, Information, Youth Policy and Sports has not yet commented on the situation. Tolekan Ismailova noted that they were finding out who imposed the ban.

«It is only known that these are some Chingiz and some Perizat from the censorship department under the Ministry of Culture,» she said.
