Part of money from sale of 19 tons of Kumtor gold spent to support som

The National Bank of Kyrgyzstan spent $760 million received from the sale of Kumtor’s gold on interventions. Deputy Amankan Kenzhebaev announced at a meeting of the parliamentary committee on agrarian policy, water resources, ecology and regional development.

«Isn’t this budget money? Shouldn’t it have been transferred to the budget?» the deputy asked.

Deputy Chairman of the National Bank Kaiyp Kulenbekov confirmed that the funds were spent to support the exchange rate of the som.

«We bought gold from Kyrgyzaltyn, this is the money of the National Bank, these are our gold and foreign exchange reserves,» Kaiyp Kulenbekov said.

The meeting of the Committee on Agrarian Policy, Water Resources, Ecology and Regional Development began an hour late.

The committee’s agenda included draft laws on the republican budget of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2023 and the prospected period 2024-2025, on state guarantees and compensations for persons living and working in highlands and remote and hard-to-reach areas and other issues.
