Ex-Education Minister voluntarily pays damages, placed under house arrest

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kyrgyzstan continues to investigate a criminal case against ex-Minister of Education and Science Almaz Beishenaliev on the fact of extortion. Press service of the ministry reported.

During the search of Beishenaliev’s house, the former official voluntarily gave $37,500.

«During the investigation of the criminal case, Almaz Beishenaliev voluntarily reimbursed the rest of the money — $62,500. He was placed under house arrest. The investigation took into account that the former official fully compensated for the damage, suffers from chronic diseases, has four minor children, and also has a permanent place of residence and does not interfere with the investigation of the criminal case,» the ministry said.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs explained that on September 27, 2022, citizen P.F., representing the legitimate interests of citizens of India studying at universities in Kyrgyzstan, applied to the police with a statement. He said that Almazbek Beishenaliev was extorting money from him for a positive decision on the issue of transfer of students (citizens of India) from other countries to higher educational institutions of Kyrgyzstan.

Almazbek Beishenaliev was detained on September 28 while taking a bribe in the amount of $110,000. According to investigators, he extorted money for the enrollment of foreign students in domestic universities.
