Sadyr Japarov calls on to invest in construction of HPPs in Kyrgyzstan

«Kyrgyzstan has sufficient water and energy resources and is one of the leaders in the Central Asian region in terms of their reserves,» President Sadyr Japarov said at Russia + Central Asia summit in Astana (Kazakhstan).

The head of state stressed that in the context of global climate change, Kyrgyzstan intends to gradually switch to renewable energy sources, primarily in hydropower, with the simultaneous introduction of resource-saving and environmentally friendly technologies.

«The energy potential of the country’s water resources is estimated at about 150 billion kilowatt-hours. But today we use less than 10 percent of our potential. Therefore, the Kyrgyz side is interested in further enhancing cooperation in the field of attracting direct investment in the energy sector, construction of hydroelectric power stations and the development of renewable energy sources. In June 2022, I launched the construction of Kambarata HPP-1. To date, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have confirmed their interest in participating in the construction of this hydroelectric power plant,» Sadyr Japarov said.

He also stressed that the implementation of this project would strengthen energy security and optimize the use of water resources in the region. Taking the opportunity, President Sadyr Japarov invited all other investors to mutually beneficial investment cooperation in the hydropower complex, including on the principles of public-private partnership. He noted that small and medium-sized hydroelectric power plants play a very important role in ensuring the water and energy security of the entire region.
