UN General Assembly condemns referenda held by Russia in regions of Ukraine

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning Russia’s holding of referenda in four regions of Ukraine. Website of the organization says.

The UN General Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, including its territorial waters.

The resolution was adopted at the emergency special session on Ukraine. At least 143 states voted for the resolution. Five countries opposed — Belarus, North Korea, Russia, Nicaragua and Syria. Another 35 abstained from voting, including Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Armenia.

«The General Assembly condemns the organization by the Russian Federation of illegal so-called referenda in regions within the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine, and the attempted illegal annexation of Donetsk, Zaporozhye, Lugansk and Kherson regions of Ukraine after the organization of the aforementioned referenda,» the resolution says.

It is stated that they have no legal force and are not the basis for any change in the status of these regions of Ukraine.

The UN General Assembly demanded the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of all Russian armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
