Ministry of Agriculture proposes to ban export of wheat from Kyrgyzstan

The Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan proposes to ban the export of wheat and its mixture with rye (meslin) outside the EAEU for six months. The draft resolution is submitted for consideration.

According to the document, the restrictions will not affect re-export, transit, as well as humanitarian assistance provided by the Cabinet of Ministers. The initiative is aimed at ensuring food security and stabilizing market prices.

To date, Kyrgyzstan has contracts with Russian suppliers for the import of 28,000 tons of food grain. Negotiations on the purchase of grain are also underway with Kazakhstan. Exact volumes are not known.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Kyrgyzstan’s need for food grain for 2022 is estimated at 769,100 tons. About 75-80 percent of the volume is expected to be covered by own production.

In early August, the Russian Minister of Agriculture Dmitry Patrushev said that Russia could revise the volume of exports of food grains, if the country does not achieve the planned harvest of 130 million tons.
