89.7 percent of Kyrgyzstan's population immune to COVID-19

At least 89.7 percent of the population of Kyrgyzstan already has immunity to coronavirus. Zuridin Nurmatov, head of the Republican Scientific-Practical Centre for Control of Viral Infections, told 24.kg news agency.

According to him, a preliminary analysis of the next serological and epidemiological study of the community immunity, which was conducted in the republic on February 21-25, 2022 in conjunction with the St. Petersburg Pasteur Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, is ready.

«We divided the entire population of the republic into seven age groups, all regions of the Kyrgyz Republic participated in the study. In the first stage, 9,400 volunteers took part in the study in 2021. The same citizens were invited to participate in the second stage. Only 42.5 percent of them were tested. Perhaps, external migration or the calmness of citizens due to the decline in the incidence of coronavirus had its impact,» Zuridin Nurmatov said.

At the first stage, 58 percent of the population had antibodies and 89.7 percent had them at the second.

«The lowest rate is among children at the age of 1-6 (80.6 percent) and 14-17 (87 percent). The highest rate is among the adults aged 50-59 (90.9 percent) and 60-69 (91.5 percent). This is most likely due to social activity. Elderly people have more contacts, go to work, visit bazaars and other public places,» Nurmatov said.

As for the regions, the lowest levels of antibodies are in Bishkek (82.9 percent) and Osh (87.6 percent), while the highest are in Naryn (93.8 percent) and Talas regions (93.6 percent).

High rates were also registered in Naryn region during the previous study. Figures in Chui region are slightly lower than the national average (85.6 percent).
