Homeless people tested for HIV and tuberculosis in Bishkek

Kolomto municipal institution held Mercy annual campaign to help homeless residents of Bishkek. Press service of the Bishkek City Administration reported.

According to it, the Pervomaisky District Administration, together with city services and non-governmental organizations, have helped 87 homeless people.

«The Bishkek TB Hospital examined people with the help of a mobile x-ray vehicle, employees of the Bishkek AIDS Prevention and Control Center tested them for HIV. Volunteers of the National Red Crescent Society of Kyrgyzstan brought warm clothes and blankets, and began looking for relatives of the homeless. The charity organization «Bishkek and Kyrgyzstan’s Diocese» also provided assistance. In addition to warm clothes and shoes, its volunteers provided psychological support and treated the homeless to hot tea and sweets. In addition, the homeless people were advised on employment,» the City Administration noted.

The municipality noted that the results of the examinations would be sent to the Pervomaisky District Administration to further provide social and medical support. All the homeless were registered with the District Social Development Department.

Kolomto has been working year-round since August 1998, and provides assistance and support to homeless people who find themselves in difficult life situation. The institution is designed for 70 people.

About 30 homeless people come to the shelter daily. They can stay overnight, get a meal, undergo a medical examination and primary sanitation, take a shower and wash their clothes in a laundry room.
