Over 1,300 homeless people registered in Bishkek

There are more than 1,300 homeless people in Bishkek. Baktygul Ismailova, head of the Social Development Department of the Bishkek City Hall, announced at a meeting of the permanent commission of the Bishkek City Council on social issues.

She noted that a shelter for persons without a fixed place of residence Kolomto operates on a permanent basis in the capital, and three more temporary ones are opened in winter.

Kolomto has been functioning since 1998, the shelter is designed for 70 places. The center provides temporary accommodation for the homeless, one-time hot meals for 70 soms. According to Baktygul Ismailova, 90 percent of Kolomto’s residents are able-bodied persons aged 23-60, 86 percent of them are men. «At least 96 percent of the homeless are people with alcohol addiction. They first need medical assistance, and then social one,» she said.
