Snow leopards to be closer. Kyrgyzstan to get new camera traps

Kyrgyzstan will get new camera traps. The secretariat of the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program informed 24.kg news agency.

«Voting was launched on World Wildlife Day, marked on March 3, on a special website. The competition involved four big cats (a tiger, a snow leopard, a lion and a jaguar). Everyone could vote. As a result, the snow leopard team won. The winners are provided with a certain financial means to purchase camera traps,» the secretariat said.

«In total, ten traps will be acquired, and all of them will be used in Kyrgyzstan, according to preliminary data, in the territory of Issyk-Kul region. In general, this campaign started to raise people’s awareness that wild cats are on the verge of extinction and need our protection,» the agency added.

The Bishkek Declaration «Caring for the Snow Leopard and the Mountains — Our Ecological Future» was adopted in 2017. It says that the threat of extinction of the wild animal due to environmental problems related to climate change, degradation of its habitats, poaching is causing a serious concern.
