Kara-Suu Lake to be assigned status of specially protected area in Kyrgyzstan

It is planned to assign the status of a specially protected territory to Kara-Suu Lake in Kyrgyzstan. Amendments to the Law on Fishing Industry were submitted for public discussion.

Initiators of the document noted that in order to preserve the unique nature and biological diversity, the government decree dated January 26, 2016 established Alatai State Natural Park in Toktogul district of Jalal-Abad region, which includes the high-altitude Kara-Suu Lake.

«The lake was transferred to a legal entity, Tabiyat KG LLC, to carry out fishery activities, in such a way the norms of the Kyrgyz legislation in the field of protection of specially protected natural areas are violated. In addition, the artificial stocking of the lake with fish can lead to the oppression of local fish species, their depletion and death,» background statement says.

Under the Law on Specially Protected Natural Territories in natural parks, any activity that creates a threat of harmful effects is prohibited. In this regard, it is necessary to exclude Kara-Suu from the list of fish industry lakes, the initiators of the bill noted.

The uniqueness of Kara-Suu Lake is not only in its natural beauty and attractiveness for tourists. The lake can become a testing ground for scientific research. Having no connection with other lake systems — natural and artificial, the lake becomes a laboratory in which it is possible to observe changes in the hydrobiological regime in the course of time.
