The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) may receive observer status at the UN General Assembly. This issue was discussed at a meeting of the Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Bakytzhan Sagintayev at the United Nations headquarters in New York with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua.
The parties exchanged views on priority areas of comprehensive cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union and the UN. In particular, the parties discussed the possibility of intensifying work on obtaining observer status at the UN General Assembly for the EAEU.
«We are ready to make the necessary efforts in this direction to systematize our joint work,» Bakytzhan Sagintayev emphasized. «I am convinced that today’s negotiations will help strengthen our dialogue and expand contacts.»
He reported on the main results of the EAEU’s activities, noting the positive dynamics in most macroeconomic indicators since its creation.
Speaking about the interaction of the commission with UN structures (UNECE, ESCAP and ECLAC), as well as with specialized agencies (FAO, UNIDO, WIPO, IOM, UNCTAD and others), Bakytzhan Sagintayev noted that the EEC pays special attention to the UN agenda in the field of sustainable development. In particular, the Treaty on the EAEU and other fundamental documents cover all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as 108 out of 169 key tasks for their achievement.
The Commission actively promotes the SDG-2030 agenda at the UN and its regional commissions, and traditionally uses the platform of the Political Forum on Sustainable Development to position the EAEU as a reliable partner in the international arena.
In turn, Li Junhua emphasized the important role that the EAEU plays among international organizations of regional economic integration, expressing confidence that the meeting will give a new impetus to cooperation between the EEC and the UN.
