The U.S. Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions against the media group Rossiya Segodnya and its CEO Dmitry Kiselev, as well as TV-Novosti and Eurasia NGO. The statement by the U.S. department says.
Restrictions have also been imposed on the director of Eurasia NGO Nelly Parutenko.
It is noted that the sanctions are aimed at two individuals and three legal entities «for their ties to Russia’s destabilizing actions abroad.»
The USA claims that these individuals are allegedly conducting covert «information and psychological operations» using «cyber capabilities,» including in Africa, Europe, North and South America.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury emphasizes that the restrictions are imposed not for the content of these media outlets’ reports, but, allegedly, for their conduct of «covert information and psychological operations, which is not journalism.»
As it is stated, transactions with the media group Rossiya Segodnya and TV Novosti «are permitted until 00.01 U.S. Eastern Time on November 13, 2024.» The department also renewed the general license, «permitting certain transactions customarily associated with and necessary for the receipt or transmission of telecommunications involving the Russian Federation,» which were previously prohibited. The document also «permits certain transactions from the United States or by U.S. persons, wherever located, with the Russian Federation that involve the exchange of communications over the Internet.» It also permits «the export and re-export, sale, and supply from the United States or by U.S. persons, wherever located, to the Russian Federation of software, equipment, or technology related to the exchange of communications over the Internet.» However, the renewed license excludes transactions in this area with Rossiya Segodnya and TV Novosti.
