Detention of Pavel Durov: Telegram team releases first statement

The Telegram team has responded to the detention of its founder Pavel Durov in Paris.

The company said that it continues to support standards of compliance with European Union legislation, including the law on digital services.

The team also states that the messenger’s moderation complies with all standards.

«Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has nothing to hide, and he travels frequently around Europe. It is absurd to claim that the platform or its owner are responsible for the abuse of this platform,» the company said.

In today’s digital world, almost a billion users around the world use Telegram as a means of communication and a source of important information. Responsibility for the content created by users cannot lie solely with the platform itself, the statement says.

Recall, Telegram founder Pavel Durov was detained on the evening of August 24 at Paris-Le Bourget Airport.

According to the French TV channel TF1, the billionaire arrived in France from Azerbaijan on his private jet.

French authorities accuse him of complicity in drug trafficking, crimes against children and fraud due to the lack of moderation on Telegram. Pavel Durov’s detention has been extended by 48 hours, AFP reports.
