Sadyr Japarov meets with President of European Council Charles Michel

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, within the framework of his working visit to the Kingdom of Belgium, met in narrow and expanded formats with the President of the European Council Charles Michel in Brussels. The press service of the head of state reported.

At the meeting, the parties discussed current issues of bilateral interaction on a wide range of issues, exchanged views on the prospects for trade and economic cooperation, investment and implementation of joint projects in the field of energy, rare metals, agriculture, and much more.

«Charles Michel, welcoming Sadyr Japarov, noted that he warmly recalls his visit to Kyrgyzstan, which took place last year. He reaffirmed his commitment to further deepening bilateral large-scale cooperation based on the principles of democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law, as well as economic interaction,» the statement says.

The President of the European Council outlined promising areas of cooperation with Kyrgyzstan, such as energy industry, environmentally friendly technologies, transport and more.

In turn, Sadyr Japarov thanked Charles Michel for the official invitation, warm welcome and special attention to Kyrgyzstan as a whole.

Today, Kyrgyzstan and the European Union stand on the historic threshold of a new level of cooperation. The fact that the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement is signed not only by the EU, but also by all 27 member states indicates its importance.

During the conversation, Sadyr Japarov also outlined the negative consequences of climate change, which affect all countries of the world, including Kyrgyzstan with its thousand-year-old glaciers.

He told that recently in Austria, Vienna, together with the World Bank, a special donor platform was created for the construction of Kambarata-1 hydropower station, which is one of the largest projects in Kyrgyzstan.

Sadyr Japarov offered to join the construction of this project, taking into account the EU strategy called «Global Gate».

The President of the Kyrgyz Republic also noted that currently cooperation in the field of rare metals is considered one of the most important areas for the Kyrgyz side. The Kyrgyz Republic has 17 important metals of interest to European countries, 10 of them are found in large quantities, these are europium, gadolinium, niobium, lithium and others.

Japarov invited potential investors and financial institutions to cooperate for implementation of projects on rare metals.

In addition, President Japarov touched upon an issue that is strategically important for Kyrgyzstan — the sphere of transport, which has not been resolved since 2006.

He noted that Kyrgyzstan and the country’s airlines were included in the European Union Aviation Safety List in 2006, in other words, in the «banned airlines list», due to non-compliance with flight safety requirements. Since then, planes from Kyrgyzstan have stopped flying to European Union countries.

«Sadyr Japarov emphasized that he himself pays special attention to this issue. Over the past two years, four airports have been reconstructed in the country, and a new airport is planned in Jalal-Abad. A special decree was issued on improving the activities of the State Civil Aviation Agency. All funds necessary to modernize all buildings and equipment are allocated. The State Civil Aviation Agency has been working closely with the structures of the European Commission since 2023. All necessary documents have been provided,» the press release says.
