Kyrgyzstan to receive $27 million from Global Fund to treat tuberculosis

Kyrgyzstan and the Global Fund have signed a contract for a $27.8 million grant to treat tuberculosis and AIDS. Director of the Association of Healthcare Programs Partner Network Aibar Sultangaziev told 24.kg news agency.

«The application was signed on our part at the end of last week. The signatures were put by the Minister of Health Alymkadyr Beishenaliev and the UNDP Resident Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Alexandra Solovyova. The contract was sent to Geneva,» he said.

The grant is signed for 2024-2026.

Application includes:

  • Treatment and diagnosis of tuberculosis — $1 million per year;
  • Provision of medicines — $8 million;
  • Support for AIDS services — more than $3 million;
  • Prevention programs — $5 million.

According to Aibar Sultangaziev, representatives of the Global Fund met with Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Edil Baisalov, the Minister of Health, deputies and the civil sector in early December.

«They stayed here for four days. We held meetings. They looked at how ready the country was for signing, made recommendations and left,» he added.

Aibar Sultangaziev stressed that the contract comes into force on January 1.

It became known in September that the Global Fund will stop funding to fight AIDS. This is due to the fact that representatives of government agencies of Kyrgyzstan were absent from the meeting at the Global Fund in Geneva to discuss the details of the country’s application for 2024-2026. The regional manager of the fund, Dumitru Laticevschi, said that negotiations on the application of Kyrgyzstan were stopped. Prior to this, the Global Fund approved funding for the country in the amount of $27.8 million until 2026.
