The delegation of Kyrgyzstan led by the Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN in Geneva Omar Sultanov took part in the Global Refugees Forum 2023.
In his speech, Omar Sultanov noted that Kyrgyzstan achieved historic results in 2019 and became the first country in the world to end the problem of statelessness.
«The plight of refugees and stateless people is a global challenge, and the Kyrgyz Republic is doing everything possible to solve this problem in the region. Four years ago, at the Global Refugee Forum, Kyrgyzstan promised to solve the problem of statelessness. Since then, we have successfully resolved the issue and introduced a system for issuing birth certificates to undocumented children. We have so far fulfilled two of the four points that we promised to implement,» he said.
The Global Refugees Forum meets every four years. Thousands of delegates representing states, UN agencies and other international institutions discussed ways to overcome the refugee crisis, which has reached 36.4 million worldwide.
The forum, which is hosted by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Swiss government, is organized by five countries — Colombia, France, Japan, Jordan and Uganda.
During the Global Forum, 32 UN organizations and 49 country teams signed a commitment to support refugees and their host communities.
