Migrants planned to be involved in “green” construction in Kyrgyzstan

The project «Promoting the Inclusion of Internal Migrants in Green Renovation in Kyrgyzstan» has been launched in Kyrgyzstan with the support of the International Organization for Migration Development Fund. Unison Group reported.

According to the National Statistical Committee, about 71 percent of the population of Kyrgyzstan are internal migrants. A World Bank report predicts that by 2050, about 200,000 people in the republic will migrate within the country due to the effects of climate change. This will lead to new challenges, including a lack of housing and poor quality living conditions.

Cities and villages in the northern, central and southwestern regions, especially mountainous areas, are expected to become hotspots of internal climate outflow.

The goal of the project is to promote the involvement of internal migrants in the efforts of the Kyrgyzstan’s government on green renovation of buildings. «Green» reconstruction will be carried out in 15 households throughout the republic. Particular attention will be paid to women as they are disproportionately affected by climate change and play a key role in decision-making at the household level.

A team of experts will work to develop a set of standardized climate-resilient plans/projects for the construction of passive energy homes that will be accessible to the entire population.

«We will try to make the most of the opportunities for obtaining solar energy in winter, renewable energy sources, insulate the premises in order to reduce heat loss and create comfortable living conditions,» Nurzat Abdyrasulova, president of Unison Group, explained.

As part of the project, it is planned to conduct workshops for women on new green building projects, energy-efficient heating, water supply and ventilation systems.
