Parliament of Kyrgyzstan rejected amendments to the law on State Guarantees of Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women, initiated by the Cabinet of Ministers.
Two MPs voted for the adoption of the draft law, while 36 MPs voted against it.
According to the First Deputy Minister of Labor, Social Security and Migration Nurdoolot Bazarbayev, the document made only editorial changes to the law to bring it in line with the Constitution.
However, MP Gulya Kozhokulova noted that the deputy minister was misleading MPs and the public. The document actually excludes the responsibility of heads of state agencies for failure to fulfill the norms of the law on State Guarantees of Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women.
Her colleague Elvira Surabaldieva stressed that the bill was presented only for «excuse» to the leadership and is not aimed at solving pressing problems related to women’s rights in the Kyrgyz Republic.
