The Bishkek City Council proposes to extend the moratorium on renaming avenues, alleys, squares, city parks, boulevards, streets and lanes. The corresponding draft resolution has been submitted for public discussion.
The background statement notes that in April 2013, by the resolution of the Bishkek City Council «On streamlining the issues of renaming geographical objects in the city of Bishkek», a moratorium was announced on the renaming of geographical objects, including residential areas, for a period of ten years. Now it is proposed to extend it for 10 years.
The Bishkek City Council notes that earlier it was decided, in order to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of Bishkek, to assign the names of prominent figures only to newly formed or nameless geographical objects.
«Today, within the existing administrative boundaries of the city, the streets have historically established names. The newly appeared, nameless streets are located in the newly built quarters and residential areas of the city,» the background statement says.
There are about 30 appeals from legal entities and individuals regarding renaming of streets in the central part of the city.
The City Council adds that over the years, title documents for movable and immovable property, ID cards indicating the existing postal addresses have been received. Renaming of streets entails significant inconvenience and costs for citizens. Therefore, the deputies propose to extend the moratorium.
Last year, the deputy of the Bishkek City Council Taalaibek Usubaliev suggested renaming the districts of the capital, as the existing names are obsolete. Speaker of the Parliament Nurlanbek Shakiev came up with a similar initiative at the kurultai.
