Reform of Kyrgyz alphabet: MP proposes to introduce W letter

Deputy Aibek Osmonov proposed to introduce the letter W into the alphabet at a meeting of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan.

According to him, this sound is necessary for the correct spelling of the word «ava», which is used in Issyk-Kul and Batken regions.

«I say, «Sadyr ava» or «Sultanbay ava». And how should I write: «ava» or «aba»? I propose adding the letter W to the alphabet. There are difficulties in writing books,» Aibek Osmonov said.

Zhyldyz Orozbekova, Deputy Chairwoman of the National Commission for the State Language, replied that the word «ava» has been used since ancient times, it came from the word «obo», meaning «senior», and is used throughout the republic. She noted that it would be correct to write «aba».

Aibek Osmonov also supported his colleagues who proposed to introduce a soft version of the letters A and K.
