EU Envoy: Sanctions should not cause deterioration of relations with Kyrgyzstan

«We would not like the issue of sanctions to be the reason for deterioration of relations between the European Union and Kyrgyzstan,» the EU Sanctions Envoy David O’Sullivan said at a briefing in Bishkek on Tuesday.

According to him, it is important for the European Union to establish channels of communication with the authorities of countries that have not joined the sanctions. At the same time, the EU understands that each state has its own economic and political context.

«We respect it. We know that Kyrgyzstan has strong and extensive trade and economic ties with Russia. We do not intend to damage them. We are working to strengthen and improve relations between the European Union and Kyrgyzstan. This requires a dialogue to get accurate information about trade flows and the measures that will be taken. We are ready to provide assistance to improve the capacity of regulatory authorities. They should better understand the character and nature of the sanctions. We are ready to send a mission for these purposes in the fall,» David O’Sullivan said.

Meetings have taken place with administration officials, he said.

«A good start to the dialogue has been made. But further actions need to be taken to reach a mutually acceptable solution,» the EU Sanctions Envoy said.

David O’Sullivan was appointed to this position earlier this year. He visits states with issues related to circumventing anti-Russian sanctions. They focus on goods that have potential on the battlefield. A list of 770 advanced technology products that could potentially be used for military purposes has been compiled.
