Kyrgyzstan takes 140th place out of 185 in Corruption Perceptions Index

Kyrgyzstan took the same place as in the previous year with 27 points out of 100 in the Corruption Perceptions Index 2022. The representative office of Transparency International in the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

Kyrgyzstan ranked 140th out of 185 countries.

«The place is not the main thing in the ranking, since the number of states can increase or decrease. The main indicator is the number of points received. Data on the places of Kyrgyzstan in the index from 2012 to 2022 show a high level of corruption in the republic for a decade. The Kyrgyz Republic cannot get to the level above 30 points,» Transparency International noted.

Denmark (90 points) takes the 1st place in the Corruption Perceptions Index this year, followed by Finland and New Zealand (87 points each).

Strong democratic institutions and respect for human rights also make these countries one of the most peaceful countries according to the Global Peace Index. South Sudan (13 points), Syria (13 points) and Somalia (12 points) take the last places in the ranking.

As for the CIS countries, Georgia (56 points) and Armenia (46 points) take the leading positions. Kazakhstan scored 36 points, degrading its position by 1 point compared to last year (37 points). Uzbekistan continues to improve its position — 28 points in 2021 and 31 points in 2022, thereby surpassing Kyrgyzstan for the second year in a row.

Turkmenistan closes the rating of CIS countries with 19 points.

Transparency International emphasizes that for many years, various national sustainable development programs and anti-corruption strategies have been developed in Kyrgyzstan. But many of them remained unfulfilled, and, most importantly, no one was punished for their non-fulfillment. All this was accompanied by a lack of real public discussion of these programs and strategies.

«The reason for such a high level of corruption for decades was the absence of serious restrictions that would prevent officials from maximizing power and entering public service on the basis of loyalty and kinship. The absence of such restrictions has led to a low quality of public administration and a weak rooting of the principles of the rule of power, as a result of which we have a low quality of the state and bureaucracy, which are insurmountable obstacles in the fight against corruption,» the office of Transparency International in the Kyrgyz Republic explained.

The Corruption Perceptions Index measures the level of corruption in the public sector in various countries. It is compiled on the basis of surveys of experts and entrepreneurs conducted by independent organizations around the world, and has been published annually since 1995. States are ranked on a scale from 0 to 100, with 0 being the highest perception of corruption and 100 being the lowest.
