Scientists of Kyrgyzstan and Russia to jointly study glaciers

Scientists from Arkhangelsk Oblast of Russia and Kyrgyzstan have begun a joint study of glaciers. The corresponding agreement was signed by representatives of the Federal Center for Integrated Arctic Research and the Institute of Water Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic. Ecology news agency reports.

According to it, the study of the Kyrgyz glaciers will help preserve the rivers of the republic and assess the processes of melting Arctic ice.

Experts note that the degradation of permafrost and glaciers occurs not only in the Arctic, but also in the mountains of Asian countries. Moreover, the melting processes here occur much faster, which will allow scientists to obtain the necessary data in a shorter time. Russian specialists are exploring Kyrgyzstan, including as a model area.

Ice is the main resource for replenishing mountain rivers, which provide water for people, as well as agriculture and energy.

The samples taken by scientists will show how climate change affects the water content of rivers. The results of the research will help predict future sources of water supply and assess the melting of Arctic ice.

In the fall of 2022, specialists have already held a joint expedition to Ala-Archi river valley. Studies have shown that the ice there melts much faster than it forms. This leads to a decrease in the water content of rivers.
