Ata Meken faction introduces draft law banning glacier destruction

Ata Meken faction introduced a draft law banning destruction of glaciers in Kyrgyzstan. Its leader Almambet Shykmamatov told.

According to him, the Water Code is amended. Members of the faction noted that it was necessary to eliminate the norm allowing the disposal of Davydov and Lysyi glaciers for industrial purposes.

«Glaciers are the natural wealth of Kyrgyzstan, the price of water will grow in the future, shortage of drinking water is global. And we must conserve our water resources and the ecosystem. And gold must be extracted by underground methods,» Almambet Shykmamatov believes.

According to estimates, the volume of Davydov glacier is 0.14 percent of the total area of the country’s glaciers. At the same time, from 1995 to 2002, due to changes in climatic conditions, Davydov glacier retreated 170 meters and Lysyi glacier — 70 meters.

The amendments to the Water Code were approved by the Parliament in 2017 and signed by Almazbek Atambayev.
