Mass arrests: Azimbek Beknazarov joins hunger strike

Former Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan to Malaysia Azimbek Beknazarov, who is being kept in the Bishkek remand center 1 on charges of attempt to seize power by force, joined the hunger strike of imprisoned members of the Committee for Protection of Kempir-Abad reservoir. He officially notified the State Penitentiary Service of it. The department confirmed the information.

Azimbek Beknazarov also made an appeal. He reminded the international human rights organizations that the mass arrests took place two months ago. According to him, dozens of people, who openly expressed their opinion and position on the Kempir-Abad issue, were illegally detained. The politician stressed that no investigative measures were carried out for these two months, but at the same time, the period of detention is being extended.

«If you do not support the opinion of the authorities, then you will be immediately imprisoned, despite the fact that the norms of freedom of expression of thought and opinion, discussion of state decisions, the right to hold peaceful assemblies are enshrined in the Constitution of the republic and in international treaties. Expressing my solidarity with the political prisoners who have gone on a hunger strike since December 13, supporting them, I declare a political hunger strike. I officially informed the head of the remand center 1,» Azimbek Beknazarov emphasized.

At least 17 defendants in the criminal case on an attempt to seize power by force, held in the Bishkek remand center 1, went on a hunger strike. The condition of ex-deputy of the Parliament Orozaiym Narmatova and activist Perizat Suranova has deteriorated sharply.

The arrested placed all responsibility for the consequences of the hunger strike personally on the president of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov, Chairman of the State Committee for National Security Kamchibek Tashiev, Minister of Internal Affairs Ulan Niyazbekov, Prosecutor General Kurmankul Zulushev and the investigators, prosecutors and judges.
