First People's Kurultai: Only 150 out of 1,000 delegates are women

The first People’s Kurultai is being held in Bishkek on Friday.

Opening the event, the State Secretary Suyunbek Kasmambetov explained that kurultai was of great historical importance for the Kyrgyz. He told that since ancient times, the Kyrgyz argued for six days on various issues, and then came to a consensus.

«Since ancient times, aksakals were accompanied to a place of honor at the kurultai. Issues of land, security, roads, compensation, lawsuits were resolved there, and khans were also elected. The news about the decisions of the kurultai was spread by message deliverers. To date, the organizing committee has received more than 1,600 applications for participation, as a result, 1,072 delegates have been elected. Of these, from Batken region — 71, Jalal-Abad region — 147, Naryn region — 128, Osh region — 179, Talas region — 76, Chui region — 218, Issyk-Kul region — 127, Bishkek city — 60, Osh city — 30. In addition, 26 labor migrants take part in the kurultai, 10 more people are representatives of religious confessions. More than 150 people are women, 924 people are men. In general, representatives of twelve nationalities were elected as delegates,» Suyunbek Kasmambetov said.
