President Sadyr Japarov and UNDP Administrator discuss joint projects

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, as part of his participation in the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, held in New York (USA), met with the Administrator of the UN Development ProgrammeAchim Steiner. Press service of the head of state reported.

The parties exchanged views on cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the UN, including in the field of the environment, development of mountain regions. Issues related to supporting the reforms in Kyrgyzstan and practical implementation of its international initiatives were also discussed.

Sadyr Japarov stressed the need to build up the project activities of the UN Development Programme in connection with global climate change, the coronavirus pandemic and other factors, due to which many goals of preserving ecosystems, eliminating poverty and hunger, and supporting economic growth were under threat of their incomplete implementation.

He also drew attention to the importance of implementation of a program to support Kyrgyzstan in the field of economy, food security and sustainable development, especially in terms of the development of mountain regions.

The President noted that measures are being taken in Kyrgyzstan to address the problem of intensive melting of glaciers, and programs are being implemented to protect mountain ecosystems. In addition, the head of state stressed the importance of adopting a resolution initiated by Kyrgyzstan on declaring 2023-2027 the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions, as well as international support to achieve the country’s goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Sadyr Japarov drew attention to the tragic events as a result of the invasion of the Tajik side, which claimed the lives of 59 people and led to the destruction of social and civil infrastructure.

He expressed gratitude to UNDP for support and emergency assistance in these difficult days for the country.

In turn, Achim Steiner thanked the President for the meeting, noting 30 years of fruitful cooperation between the organization and Kyrgyzstan. He expressed interest in learning about the priority areas of the country in order to determine further vectors of cooperation.

Achim Steiner expressed condolences to Sadyr Japarov in connection with casualties as a result of the situation at the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border and wished soonest resolving of the situation.

He expressed readiness to support the restoration of social facilities in the affected areas.

In addition, the UNDP administrator proposed to deepen cooperation with Kyrgyzstan on the issues of «green economy» and assured of his intention to continue fruitful cooperation with the Kyrgyz side.

The parties agreed to deepen cooperation and further prospects for interaction.

The President of Kyrgyzstan spoke at the General Debate of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. He expressed the country’s position on the armed conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border.

Emergency situation has been introduced in Batken region. Shooting began at several sites of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the morning of September 16. Settlements in Leilek and Batken district came under fire. The Ministry of Health reported 198 victims, 59 people were killed. As a result of the armed conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, residents of seven villages in Batken and Leilek districts, as well as Dzhekendi village in Chon-Alai district of Osh region, left their homes.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan opened a criminal case on crimes against peace.
