717 people convicted within January riots case in Kazakhstan

At least 717 people were convicted on charges of riots during the January events, theft, robbery, possession and carrying of weapons in Kazakhstan. It was announced following the results of the board meeting of the Prosecutor General’s Office.

The number of people sentenced to real prison terms is not specified. On July 18, the Prosecutor General’s Office stated that 83 defendants received real terms of imprisonment in cases related to the January events, who, according to the investigation, «committed serious crimes related to inflicting violence on government officials, destruction of property», «did not compensate for the damage and had outstanding conviction.»

To date, 474 criminal cases have been sent to courts.

The Prosecutor General’s Office also announced termination of unfounded criminal prosecution against 1,077 persons. Some 512 people were released from service premises and temporary detention facilities.

Mass protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2, 2022. Residents of Zhanaozen and Aktau in Mangistau region opposed the increase in prices for liquefied gas, then the protests spread to other regions.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev introduced a state of emergency in the republic, dismissed the government and became the head of the Security Council. At his request, the CSTO countries sent peacekeeping units to the Republic of Kazakhstan.
