Mass protests begin in Uzbekistan over amendments to Constitution

Mass protests began in Uzbekistan over amendments to the Constitution. MAKAN.UZ Telegram channel reported.

Protests were held in the cities of the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan and its capital Nukus. Residents are protesting against amendments to the Constitution of Uzbekistan, which could deprive them of the opportunity to hold a referendum on secession from Uzbekistan.

RIA Novosti reported, citing the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the country, that public order in Nukus has been restored, explanatory work is carried out with citizens about the inadmissibility of violation of the laws.

Karakalpakstan is a republic within Uzbekistan. The current Constitution of Uzbekistan guarantees the sovereignty of Karakalpakstan, and that the people have the right to secede from Uzbekistan on the basis of a general referendum of the inhabitants of Karakalpakstan. It was these paragraphs that were removed from the new version of the Constitution, which caused indignation among the residents of the region.

Amendments to the Constitution of Uzbekistan were submitted for public discussion on June 26.
